Are you a visual artist who wants to work in a way that is kinder to the planet? Maybe you don’t make art, but you like to take photos on your phone? If you are concerned about climate change and want to take action but you need help, I have a few acorns of wisdom to share.

BACKGROUND

In 2004 I began making environmental art (read more here). Over the years, on my quest for non-toxic art materials, I endured a lot of frustration: lies abound when it comes to ‘eco friendly’ products. The good news is that you will struggle less with greenwashing after reading my take on it.

BROADER THEMES

While exploring sustainable art and better practices we must also consider worker’s rights and broader societal themes. Everything is interwoven in the ecology of Earth. At the same time, I have opted not to make this book overwhelming. It is comprised of three main areas or elements:

Water: respecting it, how painting is toxic and what we can do to fix that, water conservation, and more.

Air: technology, digital art, and internet use in everyday life.

Earth: self-care, resources, and simple acts of planetary stewardship.

My goal with this book is to teach, not preach! I learned through many mistakes and meeting knowledgeable people on the way. It never ends.

PRINTING

Even though it is more expensive, once again I will print using plant and vegetable-derived inks that do not add any poison to our waters. The paper used is recycled or sustainably scourced, and every aspect of the production is as clean as possible.
